labeling in Burgundy uses geographic tiers to show how specific the origin is and what quality level to expect. Bourgogne marks the regional scope, covering the whole Burgundy area. Côte d'Or denotes the main subregion within Burgundy, the belt that includes the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The village designation identifies the commune where the grapes come from, and Premier Cru or Grand Cru point to climats—the very specific vineyard sites within those communes. So the best description is that Bourgogne is a regional designation, Côte d'Or denotes the main subregion, Village indicates the commune, and Premier/Grand Cru indicate climats within those.
